WHAT TO EXPECT DURING AN EYE CHECKUP

Eye checkups are significant examinations. What one expects from the examination should depend upon the type of eye checkups. The eye checkups could be a regular eye checkup that one does routinely. In general these checkups test the eye sight of the person using various methods and tools. If the patient wears prescription glasses or lenses, the eye checkup could also include testing the numbers.

The Retina

An eye checkup could also be for the diagnosis for an underlying disease or a follow-up checkup after an eye surgery to check the functioning of eyes. Thus the eye checkup routine and procedure is different for different eye conditions. The checkup could also depend upon the age of the person.

Testing the eyes externally

A very basic and general external eye examination includes eye movement where the doctors ask the patients to move the eyes in different directions while looking into the eyes with the help of a bright light source.

The eye doctor could also ask the patient to focus the eyes on an object and then ask to follow the movement of the object with eyes while moving it in different directions.

Eye Dilation

One must know that doctors dilate the eyes using eye drops. The dilation is used to expand the eye pupil. This is necessary for the doctors to get a better view of the retina of the eye. This is the most common method uses by doctors worldwide and generally takes few minutes to take an affect.

The eye dilation drops have different strengths and patients must be prepared for some vision discrepancies until there effects lasts. With dilated eyes the patients might not be able to focus properly, have issues with bright lights and have blurred vision. This effect lasts until the effects of the drops end. The patients must be prepared for these conditions so as to bring a companion with them to assist. As soon as the affect of the drops end, one should have a normal vision.

It is important here to mention that not all eye examinations need eye dilation.

Visual Equity Test

It is the most common tests that everyone is aware of. This test tests the sharpness of the eyes. The doctors use a chart that has letters written on them. The letters size gets reduced as the chart goes down.

The ophthalmologist  ask the patient to read the letters to see how small the patient can read. This test is done with both eyes open and then with individual eyes with another eye closed or covered.

Refraction Tests

This test is done for eye glass or lens prescription. This test also help doctor find out whether the person is short sighted (have Myopia) or long sighted (have Hyperopia) along with other refractive issues.

The doctor asks the patient to look at a far away chart and keeps flipping the lenses until the vision is clear, thus arriving at the exact prescription number.

Retinal Examinations

Retinal examinations are included when a person have conditions or lifestyle that could affect the retina. For example, for a person with diabetes or with an eye injury history, retinal examinations are included in the checkups. For the retinal checkups, eye dilation is done in to expand the eye pupils. The eye is then looked for leaking blood vessels or fluid buildup and other issues.

Glaucoma Tests

Glaucoma tests are included in a comprehensive checkup especially when the patients have Myopia or when the patient s above certain age. This test is also included when the person has glaucoma history in the family as the condition is associated with hereditary. This test includes a tool to measure the pressure built-up inside the eye. The tool used is called a Tonometer. Eye drops to numb the eyes could be administered and then using the Tonometer, the pressure is measured.

Whether one has any eye issue or not, each person must go through them even if they feel they do not have any eye issues. Issues like glaucoma are better treated when detected earlier. Also people with conditions that affect the eye health are suggested to have regular eye checkups.
