The surgeon makes a small incision towards the outside borders of the cornea. The surgeon then carefully exposes the front of the capsule containing the lens. Because the cataracts are more advanced, they can normally be removed in one piece, although any smaller parts can be removed using suction.
Intracapsular cataract extraction (ICCE) may be required in rare circumstances. This procedure is similar to extracapsular but has a wider incision. If a person’s cataracts were induced by trauma, it is usually necessary.
